on the subject of Damian getting hugs

The one person that I know he really wants respect and approval and love from is Bruce.  And honestly, I don’t think that Bruce giving him hugs is going to help him at all.  I think the way to make Damian happier and emotionally healthier, is for him to realise he doesn’t need Bruce’s approval.

And I am aware this is based on my strong dislike of Bruce, but you can also see unhealthy tendencies the previous Robins have stemming from desperately searching for Brice’s approval and affection.  I mean, look at Stephanie.  As a vigilante, she doesn’t have a lot of faith in her abilities and I feel this was constantly reinforced by Bruce’s control issues and high standards.

Whereas, Dick is constantly praising Damian when he does something correctly, while still lecturing him on what he did wrong, but both of these are constructive and not likely to damage any of Damian’s self-worth (and I do think that he has a lot of self-worth issues, it’s part of why he’s so arrogant and pushes himself so much and constantly reminds others that he’s Batman’s worthy successor, and no one else).

In some ways, Bruce is a lot like my dad, although much, much worse, and I don’t want Damian to turn out the way I have.
